The New Word of Mouth

Social media ‘platforms’ are complex websites that allow a very simple process – the ability for people to communicate directly – by uploading, viewing and interacting with  information and images.  They can take the form of a basic forum, a picture or music showcase, a chat room, review site, a directory, or more complex ones like Facebook that have several functions. The key element is that the information (content) is primarily from the public and can be interacted with in some way by the public.

Over the last 10-15 years the number of these sites has grown from a handful to thousands – some very broad based, some sector, interest or geographically specific.  The sophistication and functionality has developed too, along with a growing acceptance and dependence by the public. The Worldwide users of Facebook alone will reach 800 million by next year. It is a fact that 80% of people in the developed nations access the internet and 60% of those now do so on some form of mobile device – making Social Media even more accessible and easy.

Relevance to all businesses

This makes the use of Social Media by businesses more relevant and even necessary – whether your business offers products or services to the consumer or to other businesses.  Accessing potential users or customers, interesting them and engaging them in a ‘conversation’ is now the focus of many businesses marketing strategies. However doing that in the right way, at the right time, with the right message is crucial. The key principle is engagement and establishing relationships. To try and inform, announce and push a sales message consistently via social media is a common mistake – and to see it as a fast-track shop window, catalogue or e-commerce site is just going to end in disappointment.

Social Media can very effectively widen your reach and the neck of your ‘Sales Funnel’. Drawing people in and down that funnel to become leads and eventually customers is still a delicate and complex marketing exercise.  Social Media does not suit all business models or markets.
